Why do not we remember our dreams?

A man spends a third of his life in a dream, and at this time he also sees dreams. Most often he does not remember them, waking up, and even if they still remain in the head immediately after waking up, then after a few minutes they already escape. Why is this happening, because in real life, beyond sleep, we do not forget anything so quickly? Scientists from Monash University (Monash University) said that even those people who believe that they never see dreams, in fact see them, but forget much faster. Studies show that such people may not remember a single moment of sleep in the morning , but if they are awakened at the right time – they will find that they are still dreaming. The specific reason that people do not remember dreams is unknown, but science has several assumptions on this topic, writes the Live Science portal.

First, the hippocampus, a region of the brain responsible, among other things, for “shifting” information from short-term memory to long-term memory. The hippocampus falls asleep one of the last and, probably, one of the last wakes up. There is a possibility that when a person gets up in the morning, his sleep is in short-term memory , but since the hippocampus has not yet woken, sleep does not fall into a long-term memory. In addition, at night, the hippocampus (and it periodically shows activity) is busy sorting out the information received for the day and to new data, it can be unreceptive.

Another probable cause is a change in the levels of neurotransmitters, acetylcholine and norepinephrine, which are also involved in the process of remembrance processing. When a person falls asleep, the level of both these neurotransmitters is significantly reduced, and then, in the phase of fast sleep, acetylcholine restores concentration, and norepinephrine – no. Maybe this combination is the key to the fact that people do not remember what they dreamed.

And in conclusion – maybe the brain simply does not consider dreams to be information useful for remembering. People forget a lot of different things, for example, very few people remember what they thought in the morning, brushing their teeth, perhaps the head also refers to the same category of useless data.
