In one of the old interviews, the founder of the apple brand, Steve Jobs honestly admitted – if he had not known about the “blue boxes” and the philosophy of their creators, he would hardly have been in the IT field at all. And, accordingly, no company Apple with its historical innovations would also not exist. But what kind of “blue boxes” and what does “Cap’n Crunch” (Captain Crunch), in the world John Draper?

The story begins in the 1960s, when a talented electronic engineer Draper quit the US Air Force and became part of the “phone freaks” community. They believed that telecom operators overestimated the cost of their services and at the same time relied too much on automation to organize work. And this could and should be hacked, first of sporting interest, and then with commercial goals.

Draper was one of those who designed the protection bypass algorithm-it was necessary to “whistle” the sound at a frequency of 2600 Hz into the handset, so that the system took it as the operator’s code. And she gave me the opportunity to call on the intercity without payment. Therefore, the first hacking tool was a plastic children’s whistle, which the producer of oatmeal “Cap’n Crunch” put into the box as a bonus. It produced an ideally accurate sound for breaking, but this was not enough.

After the first successes, Draper constructed an electronic “peeple” that could give out signals at different frequencies and significantly expand the capabilities of telephone hackers. The gadget was called a “blue box”, and soon they were recognized by young Jobs and Wozniak. They realized that the IT-sphere is not divorced from ordinary life, and electronic “toys” have a mass of real application, and there are people who are interested in it. Moreover – by selling in secret “blue boxes”, two Steve got the first capital and experience, which helped them then create Apple.
