Presented is a “battery of the future”: a promising carbon ultracapacitor
The French startup Nawa Technologies has developed a technology for a new type of electric battery, which they called ultracapacitors. The principle of operation is based on the separation of atoms into protons and electrons in the space of carbon nanotubes made up of graphene and carbon. However, the detailed device and characteristics of the battery are classified as a trade secret.
In the description of the ultracapacitor it is indicated that the separation of particles does not occur due to a chemical reaction, so the deformation and wear of the structural elements are minimized. And the charge-discharge rate has increased thousands of times in comparison with the lithium-ion battery, you can charge the battery literally in a matter of seconds and can withstand millions of such cycles. Alas, because of this, its power density is four times lower than lithium analogs and the whole system is not stable – a day can lose 10-20% of the accumulated charge.
The ultracapacitor will not become a universal solution, but it could occupy a niche of quick-use batteries where energy does not need to be stored for long. For example, in regenerative braking systems lithium-ion batteries are useless, because of the discrepancy between the speed of the process and the rate of charging. A super-fast ultracapacitor is able to “catch” all the energy in order to give it away in a minute or two while performing another maneuver.
In the ultracapacitor design only aluminum and carbon are used, rare earth elements are not needed here and then it is cheap in production. And even such a battery can be integrated directly into the chassis, made part of the door or wing, without degrading the performance and the need to allocate a separate compartment. In combination of ultracapacitor with a classic lithium-ion battery, a convenient and multifunctional hybrid battery is obtained. Their production is scheduled for the second half of 2019.
