Ilon Mask explained when he could release the “cheap” Tesla
The head of Tesla Ilon Mask explained the reason why his company delays deliveries of the cheapest electric vehicle model. According to the entrepreneur, the shipment of Model 3 to buyers will begin only after the volume of output reaches 5,000 pieces per week. In his estimation, this will happen in 3-6 months.
If Tesla starts shipping Model 3 right now, the company “will lose money and die,” wrote Mask on Twitter. Initially, the company planned to produce an electric car before the end of 2017.
Model 3 – the most affordable Tesla machine – was shown in April 2016. The price of the five-seat hatchback, designed for the mass market, starts at $ 35,000. For comparison, the Model S sedan and the Model X crossover are sold for $ 75-100 thousand. The car is capable to pass about 350 kilometers on one charge, and to 100 km / h it is dispersed only for six seconds.
Each car will be equipped with a 15-inch touch screen, two storage compartments (front and rear), an autopilot system, and a solid glass roof – from the windshield to the trunk.
Also planned for release is the all-wheel drive version with two engines – in the front and rear of the car. It can accelerate to 96 kilometers per hour in 3.5 seconds, and the maximum speed will be almost 250 kilometers per hour.
In April, Mask announced that the release of Model 3 was delayed due to the overabundance of automation on assembly lines. “Excessive automation in the production of Tesla was a mistake, or rather, it was my mistake, people are undervalued,” he said. “We had a crazy, complex network of conveyor belts that did not work, so we refused it.”
