South African company Gourmet Grubb is preparing to enter the market with a product called “entomilk”. It is derived from a substance called “cockroach milk,” which attracted the attention of scientists several years ago. Then the researchers recognized its potential, but questioned the possibility of eating – what has changed over this time?
Most cockroaches lay eggs, however the species “Pacific beetle cockroach” is viviparous. The female bore cubs in its womb and feeds it with something remotely similar to the milk of mammalian creatures. These are tiny crystals that contain a “complex lunch”: essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, sugar, etc.
It is proved that the cubs of this species of cockroaches significantly exceed their relatives in terms of growth rate and vitality. Two years ago, scientists even managed to “milk” cockroaches – to develop a method of extracting milk without harm to the insect. However, from hundreds of cockroaches only 100 grams of substance, which was immediately recognized as dangerous for humans, were aimed. After all, in fact, it is a concentrate, and it is intended for a very different metabolism.
The word “entomilk” is one-root with “entomophagy”, which means the use of insects for food. In the company Gourmet Grubb they say that they have isolated from cockroach milk a complex of substances suitable for the creation of safe ice cream. First of all, it is zinc, iron, potassium, and also a certain amount of proteins and minerals. It is claimed that from a sweet delicacy such ice cream turns into a superproduct that changes the quality of life, but this is what experts will establish .
